A bowl-shaped depression, usually circular, in the surface of a planet or moon. The craters of the Moon, like many of those on Earth, were created by meteorite impacts, which leave a distinctive crater rim along with tell-tale ejected matter. Craters can also be formed by explosive volcanic eruptions. Or sometimes by subsidence, for example, after underground nuclear test explosions.
